ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Marcus Cloer | Historical Fiction Author

Marcus Cloer is a historical fiction author from South Carolina whose love for storytelling began in childhood, sitting on the lap of his great-great-grandfather — a man whose firsthand accounts of the Civil War painted vivid portraits of a nation in turmoil. Those early stories stayed with Marcus and laid the foundation for what would become a deep and lifelong passion for history.

Before writing, Marcus spent years as a business owner in a variety of fields, but his most beloved work was in commercial diving — building and repairing underwater structures. The challenge of working beneath the waves sharpened his resolve and fueled his fascination with the sea, a theme that now anchors many of his historical narratives.

Marcus’s journey as a writer began with a collection of campfire stories titled Learning to Hunt — a heartfelt and humorous tribute to self-teaching, ethics, and the wisdom earned through experience. The warm reception of those stories led him to a new calling behind the keyboard, where he now brings history to life through compelling characters and richly detailed settings.

His current work, The Watson Series, is a sweeping Civil War saga that blends naval action, espionage, and the quiet heroism of those who lived through America’s bloodiest conflict. His debut novel, The Louisiana Purchase, introduces the Watson family and the Confederate Merchant Raiders — Southerners who fight not just for their homeland, but to challenge the North’s economic stranglehold in a daring financial war at sea.

While Marcus writes from a Southern perspective, his loyalty — like that of his characters — lies first with humanity and justice. His protagonists oppose slavery unequivocally, and many go to great lengths to dismantle it. For Marcus, historical fiction isn’t about glorifying the past; it’s about inviting readers to walk through it, to feel the pain and the progress, and to see how ordinary people shape the future by choosing what’s right.

“I'm from the South,” Marcus says, “but I’m first and foremost an American. And so were the people — on both sides — who fought to make this country better.”

Marcus is currently seeking a publishing partner who shares his passion for military history, espionage, and untold human stories set in turbulent times. His work offers not only gripping storytelling but a chance to reflect on the values that define us.

When he's not writing, Marcus enjoys hunting, cooking, (especially his own harvests) diving, sailing, communing with nature, and exploring the threads of a past that brought us to the present and is still shaping our future.
